Carmelo Anthony Demanding Trade
Trade rumors abound – and today it’s all about Mello. Carmelo Anthony, currently of the Denver Nuggets, is being reported as wanting out of Denver. The frontrunner, as it stands, are the New Jersey Nets. While the 26-year old has garnered attention from several other teams, including the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls, sources cite it is more likely that Anthony will – if traded – go on to the Nets.
Is he Mellello like Jell-ell-o, or cool like lemonade? For us everyday Joes, a three-year $65 million contract would be a dream. Anthony, however, is expressing minimal interest in the Nuggets deal, and is seeking the greener grass.
At least he’s vocal about it with his team – and the media. Some are comparing the Nuggets trade demand to that of LeBron James – former Cleveland Cavalier and current member of the Miami Heat. However, Anthony is not demanding a prime-time special. Then again, Anthony doesn’t have multi-million dollar offers coming in, hand over fist.
The big question here is this: Do athletes automatically deserve the opportunity to carefully select his/her next employer – on national television? Surely, if any Joe is unhappy in his job, he looks for another – and waits until the perfect (and done-deal) opportunity presents itself, prior to announcing his resignation. Are athletes entitled to leave their employees waiting, only to be notified of their departure…on national television?
Cleveland Cavs fans, having not much else to hold on to, hit the streets in droves on LeBron’s day of “TheDecision”. Unfortunately, many thought that the native son would stay with the Cavs, in the hopes of actually bringing a championship to the city. The reality was, in fact, that James slapped the struggling metropolis in the face, on national television.
Is this the new wave of the future? Do athletes – or ANY employee, for that matter – have the right to do so? Would Michael Jordan, Larry Bird or Magic Johnson have ever done the same, if they were faced with today’s immediate ability to communicate with “the public”?
Certainly, NBA fans have their opinions, and we’d like to hear them!
Video: Worst Football Blunders Of All Time!
It seems like in football every week there is someone who celebrates too early costing their team a touchdown or the game. Below are two of the best videos of this that we thought you would enjoy. If you’d like to submit your favorite football blunder, we would be happy to post it!
Celebretweeting – Athletes Who Tweet
Facebook and the Twitter revolution have changed the way the world communicates. Now we can share our lives – and our innermost thoughts – instantaneously – with anyone who will listen!
Over the past several months, however, athletes and celebrities have jumped on the social media freight train, and it’s not always resulted in positive public relations. Especially when it comes to an athlete’s “fan base”. Good, bad or indifferent, there are people out there waiting to egg a celebrity on – create a story, circumstance, or lawsuit, based on (in all intents and purposes) a text message.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, Santonio Holmes, led the charge earlier this year when he told a Twitter follower to kill himself. Not long after that incident, the NFL player then greeted Twitter followers with the message that it was “time to wake and bake”.
The slang term describes the action of smoking marijuana immediately upon waking from sleep. The Pittsburgh Steelers subsequently traded Holmes to the New York Jets, whereupon his arrival he received a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Also in the NFL, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver, Chad Ochocinco, was fined $25,000 for Tweeting during the preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ocho, apparently bored with the game, violated the prohibited period when players can use social media – 90 minutes prior to kickoff and until post-game media. But the StubPass staff admits, the man can dance. And can look manly doing it. Seriously. That’s one hell of a six-pack.
Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson also found himself in Twitter trouble, after posting a homophobic slur in response to a fan’s post, after the Chiefs suffered a loss to the San Diego Chargers. Johnson was fined $213,000 and was eventually let go by Kansas City.
But Twitter isn’t just impacting the lives of NFL players and their followers. The NBA fined Milwaukee Bucks player Brandon Jennings $7,500, after the player tweeted his excitement that the team had finally got back to “500”.
While there was no harm intended, Jennings violated the zero-tolerance rule of no tweeting during – or 45 minutes before and after – a game. Other NBA players who have received the same fines include New York Knicks’ Amar’e Stoudemire and Dallas Mavericks’ Tyson Chandler.
Many believe that athletes should censor their opinions, especially through social media platforms. Others believe that those with celebrity status are revealing their true personalities when posting tweets or updates on the fly.
It is evident that sports organizations are recognizing the impact of social media, as they scramble to implement rules, codes of conduct and similar policies across the board.
What say you? Should professional sports organizations monitor the “social media” of its employees?
NFL Quarterback Controversies
Controversy is nothing new in the NFL, and the 2010 season proves to be no different. As fans and teams ramp up for the regular season, there are several quarterback controversies brewing across the National Football League.
The Philadelphia Eagles are right in the middle of a controversy, after releasing veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb – picked up by the Washington Redskins. In McNabb’s wake, Philly finds themselves deciding between Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb. The plan, apparently, is for the Eagles to rotate both quarterbacks before making a firm decision.
Rumors state that the locker room is divided as to which quarterback the Eagles would like to start the 2010 regular season, but only time (and possibly performance) will tell.
Tis The Season For Trading Spaces…
With week one of the 2010 NFL regular season on the horizon, roster cuts are being made, and trade rumors abound. Whether players like the Cardinal’s Matt Leinart lost their starting positions to other players for the sub par performance, or holdouts like the Jets’ Darrelle Revis just became too much of a pain; teams are slowly but surely trimming their rosters to the required 53.
There are several teams in the market for quarterbacks, including the New York Giants and the Arizona Cardinals. Those who are rumored to be available shortly include current Cardinal’s QB Matt Leinart, Steeler’s QB Charlie Batch, and Viking’s QB Sage Rosenfels. The rumor mill churns that the Steelers may release Batch – an old, yet effective backup – and Arizona will scoop him up.
The New York Jets have been at a stalemate with CB Darrelle Revis, and it appears that, while unlikely, there is the possibility the Jets have tired of the holdout and could trade him over the weekend.
The talented, but injury prone, Marshawn Lynch may be bidding the Buffalo Bills a farewell this weekend. With the Bills having Fred Jackson and first round pick C.J. Spiller, Lynch may be with a new team soon.
Willis McGahee may well be on his way out of Baltimore Ravens, with the Ravens finding great success in Ray Rice. A trade may be in the works over the weekend, and Baltimore may be shipping McGahee off to the Denver Broncos – a team in need of some depth at the running back position.
While the rumor mill churns, fans (and teams) most likely won’t have any definitive answers to who is staying, who is going, or who is playing in week one until the weekend is over.

Pre-Season Week One Round-Up
New York Giants | Eli Manning received 12 stitches in his head, after being lambasted by Jets’ linebacker Calvin Pace, losing his helmet, and having his head get a personal introduction to Jim Leonhard’s facemask. A concussion was ruled out, but the Giants may be playing the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend without Manning.
Undrafted rookie free agent, Victor Cruz, made his Monday night football debut with significantly better results. In addition the Giants’ unknown, undrafted wide receiver caught three touchdowns, with one of them being a literal one-handed grab resulting in a 64-yard run for the TD.
Pittsburgh Steelers | With Roethlisberger likely to start for the Steelers against the New York Giants at the New Meadowlands Stadium, there are still several questions regarding who the starting QB will be during Roethlisberger’s four to six game suspension. It appeared as though Byron Leftwich had the job, but Dennis Dixon played well enough to keep the final decision under wraps.
Additionally, first-round draft pick, Maurkice Pouncey, was all but relegated to playing his first year as a guard now has Tomlin considering throwing him in the mix for the starting (if not rotating) position of center for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Having six seemingly good receivers has also put the future of Stefan Logan in jeopardy, and his performance against the Giants this weekend – or lack thereof – could be a determining factor in the Steelers’ decision.
San Francisco 49ers | Free agent running back, Brian Westbrook, signed a one-year contract with the 49ers. Westbrook played with the Philadelphia Eagles for eight seasons.

NFL Weekend Roundup
It was a busy weekend for NFL football. The Dallas Cowboys saw Emmett Smith inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, and the Cowboys beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the HOF Game, 16-7. The Pittsburgh Steelers attended to enjoy Dick LeBeau’s induction, and we are now 3 days away from the start of the 2010 NFL pre-season. Let’s have a look at the Thursday matchups.
| New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots – Thursday, August 12 – 7:30 pm.
With the Saints looking to avoid the dreaded “Super Bowl Hangover”, the team will travel to Gillette Stadium to open the 2010 season against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. While the Saints are sick and tired of hearing the term directed at them, history speaks for itself. There has never been a repeat NFC South champion in the history of its existence. |
|
| Carolina Panthers at Baltimore Ravens – Thursday, August 12 – 8:00 pm.
The Ravens will kick off their pre-season with three QB’s in the mix. In addition, the improved passing game with Anquan Bolden and Dante Stallworth should keep the Ravens offense exciting. The Panthers are looking to evaluate the competition at the #2 wideout slot, and put last season’s horrible start in the past. |
|
| at Dallas Cowboys – Thursday, August 12 – 9:00 pm.
The Raiders have had dismal seasons recently, but feel that they are contenders. Fans are demanding a change up in play calling, and a winning season. The Cowboys are hurting after their Hall of Fame game yesterday, since John Phillips most likely has a torn ACL, and Kevin Brock sustaining a left ankle sprain. |
